Trine Librarians Present Research at State Conference

Your librarians are highly sought-after experts! Trine librarians Carly Statz and Lauren Magnuson each presented individual research at the 2010 Indiana Library Federation (ILF) Conference in Indianapolis this week. ILF is one of the largest library associations in the United States, and its members include representatives from Indiana college, public, and school libraries.

Carly's presentation, titled "We can Work it Out: Faculty Liaison Programs at Small Colleges and Universities" was sponsored by the Indiana Academic Librarians Association and detailed how a smaller college can create successful relationships with college faculty. Following the presentation, Carly answered questions and discussed challenges and solutions with the audience.

Lauren's presentation, titled "This Ever-Increasing Assault upon our Ears: Information Literacy for High School, College, and Beyond" was sponsored by the Instruction & Education Division of ILF and explored how information literacy is a crucial part of college readiness of high school graduates. The discussion that followed elicited several ideas for further collaboration between high school and college librarians to improve freshman students' preparation for college-level research.

For questions or more information, e-mail Carly at statzc@trine.edu or Lauren at magnusonl@trine.edu.

New Database: Mintel

Trine has a new business and marketing database available for student, faculty, and staff use called Mintel. This database features market research reports on target markets, demographics, consumer behavior, and more!

When you first access the database, you will be asked to agree to the terms and conditions and then create an account. The account is for your use only - it's a way for you to keep track of what reports you've looked at and bookmark the ones you like. Once you've got your account set up, you can log in anytime, sign up for RSS feeds and email notifications, and search for reports relating to consumer behavior and market segments.

Need to know what makes the average pharmaceuticals consumer tick? How the recession has affected attitudes toward dining out? What type of person goes wild for soup? Mintel has a report for you! The database is full of fascinating information whether you're a business major, sociology or economics student, or are just curious about how marketing and advertising affects our consumer choices.

Contact our Business librarian, Carly Statz, at statzc@trine.edu with questions or to find out more about Mintel or any of our library resources. Find more business databases, including a link to Mintel, on Sponsel Library's Article Page.

Google Scholar @ Trine!

Image Caption: Google Scholar search screen

As a Trine student, you are no doubt an expert at finding databases, E-Journals, and other scholarly material through the library's website (right?). On the off chance you're looking to spice things up, you can now bookmark Google Scholar as a portal to finding Trine library resources!

There are a few simple steps to setting this up:
  • Next, click Scholar Preferences next to the search bar.
Image Caption: Links for Advanced Scholar Search and Scholar Preferences.
  • Scroll down to "Library Links". Type Trine into the Search bar, and put a check box next to Trine University - Find it @ Trine.

Image Caption: Trine in the search bar and Trine University checked.

Save your preferences, and start searching. When you see the Find it @ Trine link next to an article, click and read or download!

Of course, Google Scholar only has a very small sample of the journals and articles we have at Trine - but you already knew that.

Keep an eye out for the Interlibrary Loan @ Trine link as well - if we don't have an article in our databases, you can request it from somewhere else - anywhere in the world for FREE. If you don't see the link, you can always email the library and we'll find what you're looking for.

Happy searching!

Reserve Books

Sometimes your professors will put books on reserve so that all of your classmates can share it, and no one person gets to hold onto it for too long. While the spirit of sharing is a wonderful thing, it can be annoying to trek all the way to the library to see if that reserve book is available or being used.

Fret no more! Just go online in the comfort of your dorm and type in your professor's name to check the availability of reserve items. Of course, there's no guarantee that it won't get checked out while you're on the way over - but you'll definitely know when not to bother.
